.01 Joshua Treble
Cold Filthy Techniques To Keep You Close
CADET07
CD
$10.00

Joshua Treble is one Tony Boggs, Cincinnati's most promising electronic music composer in the IDM and electronica genres. With the 2 excellent e.p. releases 'Parasol' and most recently 'Opposites Contract' on the online label aii.fm, Joshua Treble now releases his first full-length album on the celebrated Pitchcadet label, home to such innovative electronic acts as M-tec, Jetone, Jake Mandell, Accelera Deck, Datathief, and Bauri. The new album 'Cold Filthy Techniques to Keep You Close' will introduce his fans and potential audiences to Tony's uncanny ability to compose well-planned and carefully executed musical compositions. Building on a solid foundation of calculating beats, multiple layers of effects and tones, as well as lovely hidden melodies and sharp percussion, this new album will most certainly place Joshua Treble in the minds of intelligent dance music purveyors around the globe. Comparable perhaps to Scott Herren projects like Savath+Savalas and Delarosa+Asora, and perhaps even Accelera Deck, Joshua Treble takes his sound a few steps further by developing strong atmospheres, addictive beats, and layer upon layer of lovely melodies paired with surgically placed moments of glitch. This is a wonderful headphone album, mesmerizing and addictive, with so many intriguing sounds, moods, and patterns presented throughout this release, the listener may prefer this environment so as not to miss anything. Like an audio architect, Boggs develops each song with careful precision and masterful control, opening a door to an auditory kaleidoscope of sounds, but still leaving ample room for listener accessibility. Clever, inventive, and virtually indescribable, 'Cold Filthy Techniques to Keep You Close' is a profound and imaginative exploration into the many wondrous caverns of electronic music.

Ahh, fresh, yummy sounds. This disk has them in abundance. Featuring a host of up-and-coming names in electronic music--people like Phonem, Accelera Deck, Arovane, M-Tec, Lexanculpt, and many more--Bliss Tech is a garden of rich sounds and shapes, from Barui's "Pecan Ice Cream," which sounds like a Richard Devine track at half-speed, to the Pan-Sonic-meets-Laurent-Garnier track "Generic Wheat" by Viratone Ballad. Pitchcadet is a label that has been around for a few years and has received a great deal of critical acclaim. I've not been as impressed with their previous releases as others, but I do find this release to be as good as anything of the other recent compilation disks. What is nice about the disk is the odd combination of continuity and eclecticism. Each track is unique--  as unique as the artists who create them. They have sounds and shapes all their own; they convey emotions that range from heartfelt elegies (Phonem's "Suspension") to furry, distorted crunchfests (Cursor's "EXT") to sampler-on-a-binge attacks (Accelera Deck's "The Exact Color of Mercury"). Nevertheless, each track moves in conjunction with each other track, creating a nice, fluid listening experience. Great disk; get it.

.04 Jetone
Autumnumonia
CADET09
CD
$10.00

Jetone is one Tim Hecker, hailing from Canada. With Autumnmonia he makes his brilliant full-length debut for Pitchcadet. His 11 tracks range from warm, pulsing ambient landscapes, to skittering beats and lusher than lifemelodies. The opener, (SAW II-tinged) "Sandstrings" would fit nicely on a Dune soundtrack should there ever be an updated version made one day. Furthermore, tracks such as "Shear/Refract" and "Fukfunk" reflect Tim's ability to develop sophisticated beat architecture and melodies that will make you shudder. Melancholy and introspection are the key words here. Play it loud or play it quiet, its charm is inescapable and will seep deep into the recess of your being-if you let it. With tracks/releases on Interchill, FatCat, and a full length for Force Inc. Tim is headed to make a substantial mark for himself in the ever changing musical landscape.

(From Mixer Magazine, November 2000 issue ...Page 80)
People bitch all day long on the IDM list about how the "classic" sound of "IDM",  the heavy synth melodies and complex(but not manic) percussion programming, has gone the way of the dodo. May God strike them all through their optical mouses if they don't take this second opportunity to pick up Aaron Tweedy's first substantial project from two years ago. Slip Wish finds the co-founder of Pitchcadet hunting through influences for his own sound in such a way as to echo classic Aphex Twin(SAW1) and Autechre (Incunabula) without copying it. For here you can catch a glimpse of what's become a Tweedy signature: high-toned, airy percussion and rhythm elements that sound quite unlike anyone else. The reissue element includes four tracks not originally available on the first CDR ep release, as well as a hidden remix of Nerrve previously available only on the ultracool Cataract Beats compilation. So go ye champions of early Warp and R&S Records, and buy this disc! (Heath K. Hignight)
